New leadership to advance Te Hiku Iwi Development Trust

The Te Hiku Iwi Development Trust, established as a result of Treaty Settlements in the Far North, has appointed two wāhine to drive the development for the Trust.  Carol Berhgan has been appointed into a new role as General Manager for the Trust, whilst Katie Murray will oversee a Trust review process as the new Chair.
Carol brings a wealth of experience to the role, recently working on the Northland Economic Action Plan as well as Minister Sharples’ Taskforce on Economic Development.
The Trust is tasked with implementing the Te Hiku Iwi Social Development and Well Being Accord with eleven Government Ministers.  “We’ll be looking to hold some hard discussions in the next 100 days about improving the lives of our people in housing, education, welfare, justice, health and employment.  A Priorities Report has been developed that focuses on three key areas; Maximising Te Hiku Potential, Life-long Te Hiku Learning and Mana Tangata,” says Trust Chair, Katie Murray.”
“Our people are expecting to see results from our collective efforts, and I can see our leadership is committed to working together to make that happen. It’s an exciting time for us as we review our Trust deed and look towards another iwi, Ngati Kuri, becoming actively involved alongside Te Rarawa, Ngai Takoto and Te Aupouri in our mahi with the Trust. There is an opportunity to do things better, in creative ways that work and achieve real outcomes for our people. The existing iwi partnerships and relationships allow us to hugely influence how Te Hiku progresses forward together,” says Katie.
The Social Accord relationship with the Crown has stimulated Iwi and Government collaboration across a number of initiatives in Te Hiku including strategies focused on Education, Housing and Economic Development.
“My role will be to turn those strategies into action plans that prioritise work programmes for the Trust and our iwi.  This is a time to focus and reflect on the progress that has been made to this point, and then to drive this mahi forward to meet the expectations of our people,” adds Carol.
